Research Relationships

The Comox Valley Early Years Collaborative (CVEYC) has a strong history of working collaboratively with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at the University of British Columbia.

About the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP)

The Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) is a collaborative research and knowledge mobilization centre that brings together expertise, from across disciplines and sectors, to contribute to improving conditions that promote an equitable start in life for all children and their families.

Our work, based at the University of British Columbia (UBC), takes place on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) People.

HELP Vision

HELP aspires to a world where all children thrive in healthy societies, where they grow up in environments that nurture their development, and where they reach their full potential.

HELP Mission

HELP is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children through interdisciplinary research and mobilizing knowledge.

CoRE-Lab (Community Research & Engagement Lab)

The CoRE-Lab (Community Research & Engagement Lab) is part of the Human Early Learning Partnership at UBC. The CV Early Years Collaborative has been a partner of CoRE-Lab since 2017. CoRE-Lab is interested in understanding the systems that influence social and emotional well-being of children in their local communities. In the current phase of our research collaboration, we are focusing on the “high-priority areas” identified by the community as having the best potential for influencing social and emotional well-being in Comox Valley children.

We are currently co-designing a community-based research project with the Comox Valley early years community.

Featured Research

HELP’s Data & Connection Series
features the Building Connections for Valley Families Project.

Building Connections is an ongoing community-led research initiative that uses a social innovation lab approach to collectively inform and engage with communities with the goal of enhancing early years supports and services for children (conception to age 8), their families, and the Comox Valley.

How Early Development Instrument (EDI) data led to The Building Connections for Valley Families Project

Wave 6 EDI Data for the Comox Valley (2014-2016)

Early Development Instrument

One of the Comox Valley Early Years Collaborative’s key initiatives, the Building Connections for Valley Families Project was sparked by taking a closer look at the Early Development Instrument data for our region. Developmental trends at project conception (2018) showed that 60% of children in our community were meeting or exceeding child development outcomes. At the same time, this meant that 40% of children showed vulnerabilities in various developmental areas.

The CVEYC saw great potential to better support positive child development outcomes, so that more children in our community would experience improved wellbeing in their earliest and most important years of development. In 2019, following the recommendations of a commissioned report titled the 25X25 Report, the CVEYC pursued funding to support a Social Innovation Lab research project, which was named the Building Connections for Valley Families Project.

The project has received continued research support from UBC’s HELP across the three year project.
